Broken Wand: Herb Easley

By Brad Zinn:

As you may have heard by now, Herb Easley left us at 8 AM this morning. ‘Tis a sad day indeed. The shop has closed, the patriarch is gone, but the name and the memories will last. Easley’s Fun Shop will continue online in the world of bits and bytes. I will post details on the Memorial as soon as arrangements have been made. Meanwhile, RIP my friend. You have made a real and lasting contribution to all who knew you.
May G_d bless the Easley Family.
In a small bit of irony for me personally, Gary Darwin of Fabulous Magic in Las Vegas passed on last week, and now Herb Easley of Easley’s Fun Shop. These were the two people and places that helped form and launch my career as a magician. — withHerb Easley and Carol Easley.

I would like to thank everyone who showed up to our meeting last night, we had quite a good turnout!  I personally enjoyed the member stories and tributes to Gary Darwin and all the great magic performed that was inspired by Gary.  A huge thank you to Brad Zinn for showing us that never before seen table cloth with caricatures drawn by Gary (see attached pics) and the book of caricatures, those were both fantastic!

Also we have some confirmed dates for upcoming events (thanks again to David Goldberg):

He’ll also be at the Magic Castle and in Las Vegas.

·         Scott Alexander = May 8th at Denny’s in Tempe (same as above) = Needs no introduction, just be there!!!!

·         Some members have expressed an interest in an “Open Mic” night at Winfield’s so we are working on that, more info soon, but let me know if you might be interested.

Also I have to say a BIG thank you to the mystery person who forwarded my last meeting announcement to John Guasteferro.  He e-mailed me and actually put us on his guest list for his March performance!  It will be our first time at the Castle, can’t wait!

Broken Wand: Gary Darwin

I am not sure if you heard but Gary Darwin passed away…
Gary Darwin passed away on the 9th he was 83 and I first learned about this from our friend Larry Wilfong and though it is sad news I thank him for letting me know.
I reached out to Lance Burton to express my condolences as he and Gary were great friend. I got to know Gary over the years. I hung out with him and my wife Michelle one afternoon for about five hours. Gary’s collection of magic is amazing! It was there that I saw the ONLY DOG PAN… Yep just like a dove pan but for a dog… He said Morrissey made three of them. He had so many things and he was the ONLY person I ever met who knew about this wand that could load a card inside an egg… It was a wand mentioned in Tarbell and with a twisting movement it would retract a claw out and in and you could load a billet type folded card… I never saw one in person or used on but, Gary and I were talking one night and sure enough he said he had one. Gary had so many stories and he was the kind of person who could turn any subject into a teaching lesson. I never asked Gary to be my mentor in any official way. However, he helped me grow and learn and to me that is what a mentor is all about.
He was so nice and would take the time to talk to any magician…
I recently received a message from Lance Burton he had some really nice things to say about Gary…
“Gary was the first friend I made when I moved to Las Vegas in 1982.  He was a big influence on me, and as I am finding out, many others. In the last few days I have heard from countless magicians who wanted to express their love for Gary and all he had done for them.Yes, he was a larger than life person with a heart that was even larger. We will miss Gary every day.”

May you RIP Gary Darwin my thumbs off to you sir!

Wizard Magic Shop Closed Rumors Not True!

There is a rumor going around that I have closed my magic shop in SuperStition Springs Mall. WE ARE STILL OPEN. Because my store is located inside a shared store called Quite A Unique Boutique, the magic shop is not listed in the mall directory. The magic shop is open during mall hours (but closes 1 hour early(8PM) on Monday thru Thursday).

You can buy magic ANYTIME Quite A Unique Boutique is open, but we do not have a magician on staff all the time. I normally man the magic shop 5pm to 8pm on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday. I am also there on Saturdays 10am to 5pm, and performing a 30 minute free magic shop at 2pm. Sundays I am there from 11am to 6pm.

Magic Saturday Magic Group

REMINDER, THIS SATURDAY FEBRUARY 9TH AT 12:00 NOON AT PUEBLO NORTE IS OUR GROUP GET TOGETHER. SHOULD BE A GREAT AFTERNOON WITH THE FIRST OF THE FREE RAFFLE TRICKS TO BE PRESENTED BY ………
SCOTT ISRAEL MATRIX

BRIAN NIGRO EZ ADD A NUMBER
BRING A TRICK ALONG THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHOW.

NEXT MONTHS PERFORMERS ARE ……

STUART FRIEDMAN FIRST HAND…. You bring out your wallet and remove four single dollars, fold them in half, and place them onto ANYONE’S OPEN HAND. You can even wrap a rubber band around the four dollars to keep them secure. Your own hands are empty. Your wallet can be shown on both sides. The four dollars are in full view on her hand. But when you gently tap her handful of four dollars… they INSTANTLY CHANGE into FOUR HUNDREDS (Or tens or twenties). Your hands are STILL EMPTY… your wallet can still be shown on both sides… and she can IMMEDIATELY EXAMINE her four changed bills! You never have to touch the bills after they change.

DAVID GOLDBERG FIVE IN A HOLE ……… Two bills ($1 and $5) are removed from your wallet and presented to the audience. You ask a spectator to hold the $1 bill and you hold onto the $5 bill. Then, with just a little touch of these two bills together and a magic snap, a number 5 is now printed on the $1 bill! And that’s not all – the 5 is GONE from the $5 bill – it is now just a hole! The spectator can then examine the money that they are holding in their own hands as much as they want, and they absolutely pause in stunned silence by what has just happened.

SONNY SHIPMAN JOURNEY….. Imagine this.

A single deck of cards is sitting on the table. A spectator is asked to name a card; they are then asked to name a number from 1 to 52. The cards are removed at fingertips from the box and handed to the spectator.

One by one the cards are counted down to the spectators chosen number. When the card at the chosen number is turned over it is the spectators freely chosen card!

IF YOU RECEIVED AN EMAIL TO JOIN OUR GROUP AND YOU HAVE NOT ATTENED ANY OF OUR MAGIC SATURDAY SESSIONS, YOUR NAME WILL BE DELETED FROM THE MAILING LIST AND YOU WILL NO LONGER RECEIVE EMAILS.
SEE YOU ALL SATURDAY WHICH SHOULD BE A GREAT AFTERNOON OF MAGIC,

BOB COLUZZI
