March 11th we will be having Martin Cox

Hello everyone!
Our next lecture is March 11th we will be having Martin Cox!https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V_ZqM-GNZPM
Lecture starts at 7pm and is at the usual 745 E Maryland social hour starts at 6pm!
Currently no food is planned but, we can if people want to help out…
Now here is our call for help!! The club needs help folks… Not just money although that never hurts! We need some people who can do certain jobs… So, below are a list of job titles I created with the jobs the person or person’s can do… I don’t mind more than one person taking the same job to get it done easier for all… Please help the club so we can build a strong magic community here in Maricopa county!

Food and Beverage conjour! This person(s) need to make the coffee make sure we have some drinks and ice and help set up the room for the meeting and or lecture. As well help break the room down and clean up at the end of the meeting or lecture.
Lecturer solicitorWe need help soliciting people to do lectures for us and helping to see to the details they need to give us a great lecture.
RecruiterWe need all members to recruit new members however, we also need someone who can help welcome new members. Someone who can follow up with people who showed an interest but weren’t ready to join just yet.
My hope folks is that we can get a strong club going that can then support the national SAM and we can build a solid and long lasting foundation for an SYM. We can help a lot of young people be pointed in the right direction if we all just do a little lifting of the weight…
Please be sure you are up to date with your membership… For questions about your membership please contact Doug Northway spacecamp2003@yahoo.com
You can easily pay your dues right online at the below link
http://sam248.org/pay-dues/
Also please don’t think you have to only pay just your dues! The club LOVES donations and the more money we get the more things we can do! If you have an extra 10, 20, 100, 1,000 bucks laying around please don’t think we are to proud to take your money… We are NOT we are a magic club and work with pennies…. So any dollars are welcome and helpful!

Our Elections and May Banquet is coming up folks!
I have found one place I am currently working out a trade deal with. I will need people who would voltmeter to do a show in trade for the use of the room!
The venue is in Encanto park it was started in 1948 and hosts the Phoenix Garden club! The building is used for all types of events and I am talking to the manager about many options to help both our clubs join forces and grow! Haha… Grow… Garden… Ok… Moving on… I do need people who would be willing to do a magic show! We are talking about also maybe using the place to help grow the SYM if we can get anyone who will help with that….
If you want to check the place out please do and give me your feedback!

Thank you for your support of magic and PLEASE help the club help itself! It can’t be done alone!

OFFICERS NEEDED
Officers needed
Please though your name in the ring if you are willing to be an officer we currently need following
SecretarySargent at armsVice PresidentPresidentExtra officers

I am giving a lot of though to my further involvement in the club folks… Many of you know the challenges I I had in 2019 and that is not to minimize the challenges others have faced.
I did hope to get more help from club members to be honest… This will be my last request for help from members. If we don’t get enough people to step up I am not going to stay on as an officers. However, if enough people step up to fill the needed rolls then I will… However, we need people who are willing to put in the work.
A HUGE thanks to Doug who our new treasurer and I can’t think of a better person to do that job! The man literately teaches accounting!
I think the club is in a real good spot to grow folks but, its going to take a lot more than just the few of us doing all the lifting now… I have also been told by a few current officers they will not be available for the 2020-2021 season…
We are currently without a secretary as Ben had work changes…

I don’t know what else I can do to help the club folks… I just did a recruitment pitch to my customers with Wacky Zack’s even…
For the next lecture invite a friend and bring them into this crazy community of magicians!

Wacky Zack’s Magic thanks you for your support!

Wacky Zack’s Magic thanks you for your support!

We are looking for a path forward. We are in the process of working on a new plan for the new changes in our life…
We have decided to put most of our time this spring season in helping the local magic club build its membership up.
I want to be VERY clear though… The Society of American Magicians and Wacky Zack’s Magic are not connected at all. I am the President of SAM 248 currently that is all…
If you wish to join the club it is not expensive. It is 40 for a campaign membership. This would be Husband/Wife Dad/Son Mom/Son/Daugther ect..
One person has to be over 18 and be responsible for anyone under 18 the club can’t allow people under 18 to be left at the meetings. We are wanting to create a SYM Society of Young Magicians at some point but, we need parent involvement to make that happen.
If you want to join alone it is 35 bucks… That is for the whole year and it gets you to all the lectures meetings SAM puts on… It also gives you the ability to go to the year banquet and holiday parties if we are able to arrange them. There is an extra cost for those events as they include meals.
We do our best as a club but it is all volunteers and the club needs a lot of help… If you love and support magic this is a chance for you to help the club.
You can easily pay your dues right online at the below link

Also please don’t think you have to only pay just your dues! The club LOVES donations and the more money we get the more things we can do! MARCH RING 55 MEETING

Due to unfortunate circumstances, Winfield’s will no longer be our meeting place.  Robert, Bruce and I have been working to find a new meeting venue and would like to use the Denny’s we have used in the past.  Both the Mayo location and the Tempe location are not available for the third Tuesday of the month so we are temporarily moving this month’s meeting to the 25th at the Denny’s in Tempe at:

825 S. 48th Street

Tempe, AZ 85281

(See attached map)

Both Denny’s are booked for the near future on the 3rd Tuesday of the month. If any members have suggestions or preferences for better locations please let us know. This Denny’s is a good centrally located spot with easy freeway access and they have a meeting room in the back.

·        This month, president Robert Ray will be putting on a “Sleight Workshop” where he will teach some simple to mid-level sleight of hand that you can do!  He will spend one on one time as needed to make sure everyone understands and is comfortable with the material.  If there is anything you would like specific help with, let us know before the meeting so Robert can put it together.

·        Also, Ring #55 elections are coming up and we need to get some participation from the membership.  Maybe you have a vision for the future of the club, or would like to help with the finances, maybe you are a good organizer and communicator, please step up and help to advance this club and local magic!

·         You local Club dues are also coming up and you can pay ($35 single, $40 with spouse) thru the web site at www.ring55.org or by check to our treasurer Bruce Lindvig at:

WHATSIT?

WHATSIT? by Larry Wilfong

You are invited to direct your gaze to the center item In the picture.  Yep, the apparatus with the golden heart is this month’s VALENTINE WHATSIT.  The basic effect is anything you choose–a prediction or a signed coin or a borrowed ring etc. etc.–can be caused to appear inside the lovely golden locket.
Originally the creator called this classy effect SAVOY.  A later manufacturer marketed a more elaborate version as the ADRINKA NECKLACE.  A few others have ripped-off the idea (so what else is new?), but IMO this is the most practical and beautiful of all.
Be the first club member to contact our Editor, Leigh Hotz, with the correct name of the manufacturer AND the name he chose for this piece before the next meeting and YOU WILL WIN a FREE$10.00 Gift Certificate to the Wizard Magic Shop.
                                HAPPY VALENTINES DAY!

IKEA wall clock HACK

Hi guys
‘Just a quick note to mention the small IKEA wall clock (see 1st clock in picture) for Kent Axell’s wonderful mental effect taught at our January event has an almost washed out look–all white–as received from the vendor.
We (Gail) were able to remove the face of the clock and use a black magic marker to highlight the numbers for contrast (see 2nd clock in picture).
It was really quite a challenge to remove and replace the face, but the finished product is certainly worth the time spent in terms of visibility.

Funny stuff from Father Blantz

Larry the Magish
Clarke “Senator” Crandall was one of the most creative, funniest entertainers at the Magic Castle. It is a shame that more people did not get to appreciate him. He did a midnight show every evening “Not for the Prudish” – but he rarely said a bad word. He got right up to such a place in the story, then he swerved and your own mind went right into the gutter!

In his old age he was diagnosed with a brain tumor and arrangements were made for surgery in the VA hospital  in Houston. But he was such a funny guy that some of the doctors thought he was just mentally ill, and the surgery was cancelled. His own surgeon explained how he HAD to behave so the surgery could be performed – his life depended on it! For a while, Crandall did behave, a new date was set –  then cancelled. The conversation went something like this:
“You know that black orderly that cleans your hospital room?””Yeah.””Did you tell him that you own a company that has a way to grow black cotton?” “Uh-huh”. “And that you have ten thousand acres of it planted in Montana?”. “I guess so”. “And you are going to make WHITE people pick it?” “Yeah.” “Crandall, did you try to sell him stock in that company? You see why they keep cancelling your surgery? Now behave!” A few months later a new date is set, then cancelled again! Crandall had been giving a urine sample and dropped and broke the little bottle and was all upset. The orderly said it was not big deal, they were cheap and often broke, but Crandall was concerned, as “I could have cut myself and would not be able to go back to work.” “What type of work do you do, Mister Crandall?” “I am an artificial insemination donor on a goat farm!”
When they finally did operate they found a further delay would have made the tumor inoperable. Clarke lived another ten years and gave me credit for having the surgery in the first place. Seems we were at a convention in Houston and he was on the first half of the big show. He found me at intermission and we sat in the back row for the second half and discussed the situation. By that time he had decided against the surgery, but I talked him into having it. He later wrote this up for Tops Magazine and gave me credit.
On a walk one day, Crandall saw something glinting in the gutter. He picked it up and rubbed off the dirt and discovered it was a silver bullet of some kind. Thinking it might come in useful in a trick some day, he put in his left shirt pocket. That evening shopping on Hollywood Blvd. he stopped to listen to the Salvation Army band. “They have a nice act. But right in front of me was this UCLA student who was making all kinds of suggestive and obscene remarks to the Salvation Army Lass playing the tambourine. She was growing more and more impatient and finally lost it – She wound up and threw her Bible at him, as hard as she could. He ducked, and the Bible hit me right at my heart, and if it had not been for that silver bullet, that Bible would gone right through and killed me!”
Crandall would often tell why he lived where he did.
“I got off the bus in Hollywood, carrying my suitcase, looking for a suitable place to lodge, and I saw this big building with the sign ‘APT’ and I was, so I rang the bell. As the landlady opened the door to show me my room, the doorknob fell off. Being a gentleman and knowing I could fix it if I had the right equipment, I suggested ‘how about a screw for the doorknob?’ She said that was a fair exchange, and I have lived there ever since!”
On one occasion, Crandall seated a lady with a very low cut blouse on my right. He introduced me from the door on the left, so he was looking directly at her. After the intro, he turned to leave, then did a double take and addressed her directly, “By the way, Miss, SHOULD  the magician drop a card on the floor, LET IT LIE THERE!”

SAM MEETING

SAM MEETING
First a HUGE thanks to Robert Ray for helping set up our four corners that kind of morphed into two mini lectures and two corners!
