President Robert Ray opened the meeting promptly at 7:00pm by introducing out of state visiting members Joel, Richard & Nathan. Scott Israel announced the upcoming Lance Burton show on March 16th and 17th here in Arizona at the Gila River/Wild Horse Pass Resort and Casino, this is going to be great!! Vice president David Goldberg announced the upcoming lecture by Olmac on April 11th and Scott Alexander will be here on May 8th. David also reminded us all that Ring 55 elections are coming up in April and to get our nominations in now! Curt announced the Michael Fisher Magic show coming up on March 29th and sponsored by Winfield’s. Brad Zinn announced the upcoming presentation by Lee Earle of “The Artifacts Experience”. I don’t want to give away too much, but this will be a “Do Not Miss” event before the convention in July, more information is forthcoming.
We then moved to the main portion of the meeting which was a memorial to Gary Darwin who recently passed. Robert Ray began with a story of how Gary had signed an autograph but it end up in the shape of a caricature of Robert! He then demonstrated a couple of sponge ball techniques shown to him by Gary. David G. gave his tribute to Gary, followed by Jerry F. with a cut and restored rope, linking ring, and tips on thumbtip handling, all from his first hand experience with Gary. Next up was Joe M. with an entertaining story about Gary’s night club story from the forward to his thumbtip book. I’m gonna look that one up… The always entertaining Jay Gorham gave his funny presentation of the Vampire Block using a thumbtip(?) followed by a 4 card trick originated by Gary and performed by us all, very puzzling! Finally, Brad Zinn gave us some great stories of his experiences with Gary in Las Vegas including his time at Fabulous Magic (and Slot Machine Repair), Gary’s day job as a bellhop at the Riviera, among other great memories. He then demonstrated an effect using some chain links that linked (that’s a very terse description, this looked fantastic!), showed us a table cloth (that had never been seen before) with caricatures drawn by Gary while they were all sitting around the table, and a copy of the caricature book published by Gary that had many of the caricatures autographed. Wow, that was a fitting close to the meeting, and an awesome tribute to a person who influenced so many. Thank you Brad!
We look forward to welcoming visiting members, so please contact us and feel free to come to our meetings.
See you at the Convention in July:
