Letter from Alan Sands

Dear Magician Friend:

My name is Alan Sands. Before you ask to remove from my email list, I ask you to read this short letter.

I am the son of the late, George Sands. My father wrote the routines RopeSational and Sandsational Rope – the two rope tricks most rope routines are now based on. It is the routine David Copperfield used when he did ropes; the routine used by Comedy Magician Mac King as his opening in Las Vegas. Others that use these very routines include Jeff McBride & Michael Finney. Daryl’s rope routine is more than 50% based on my father’s routines, etc. (www.alansands.com/gsropes)

My father also wrote the Encyclopedia of Balloon Modeling, a book that was one of the first books on balloons. George Sands published booklets with over 880 pages of other completely original magic and routines adapted from classics. (www.alansands.com/magic-hypnosis-store/george-sands.html)

My father passed away in 2006. I inherited this treasure of magic, and I also inherited his personal collection of classic magic books, some rare, some not so rare. some worn, some not as worn. I am selling his magic book collection to raise funds so I can publish his personal magic writings into hardcover collector’s volumes, and to preserve his name in the annals of magic history with the other great writers, creators and publishers. With proceeds and profits I make from the sale of the hard covered books, I will buy beer.

Please visit the following web site and peruse the list of 500 books currently listed. More will also be added as we catalog them.

I am also collecting stories about my father, videos and other memorabilia to add to the collector’s editions. If you knew my father, met my father, have a story, married one of his ex-wives or six daughters, want to make up a fish story or tall tail and want to share, I am happy to listen.

Your name has been added to an email list labeled “Magicians.” I use this list very infrequently to send things I think you might be interested in like magic & variety jokes & news. Rarely is it advertising, but – this email is an exception. I do not like unsolicited emails any more than the next person. If you want to be deleted from my database, just ask (nicely or not – I will oblige.)

Cheerz,

Alan Sands

Greetings to All,

John Calvert has been hospitalized and will be unable to lecture as planned at the November 7th SAM 248 Meeting.   Our thoughts and well wishes go to John and his family as he recuperates.

Max Krause has graciously agreed to step in at the last minute to provide SAM 248 a quality lecturer.  Max recently was hosted by Penguin Magic as part of their Live Online series.  If you are not familiar with Max, a quick read of the reviews will help you understand the high esteem that many of the world’s top performers reserve for Max.    Also, check out Max’s websitehttp://innovativedeceptions.com/        for more information on his products and services.  And finally, Max has generously supported SAM 248 through donations to the Door Prize Raffle so let’s support Max and the SAM 248 with a good turnout  J

Carnival of Illusion

Hi Leigh;
I thought you might like to see this review of the ‘Carnival of Illusion’ I highly recommend it to magicians and their friends. The magic is rather standard – but the audience control and ability to totally involve everyone is a real learning experience. A simple card palm translates into a 3min. experience that wowed the crowd! You have to see it to appreciate the value of participation. As the old saying goes ‘A trick doesn’t entertain – a magician does‘ really rings true of this show. Note that they are now appearing at the Biltmore in Phoenix.

The Carnival of Illusion show at the Double Tree Hotel in Tucson was a real experience! Some great magic combined with a audience participation that makes each of the audience feel that they are part of the experience and really appreciated. I am a magician and this is the second time we have attended. My wife has accompanied me to many shows and conventions all over the world (Germany, England and Spain etc.) and this show is the only show that Inge has asked to go back to and we will probably make it back next year. Another new development is that they now also have a show at the Biltmore Hotel in Phoenix. Check out their web page for more basic information!HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

I just got an email from Roland and they will offer a discount on seating to magicians. just put “Secret” as a gift code.

John Calvert Lecture (SAM Club)

Next week we have the great honor to host John Calvert as our evening’s lecturer.  Normally, I attach a flier to this email that gives more details about the scheduled Lecturer’s background, accomplishments, etc.  Some of our readers may have difficulty opening attachments and I don’t want anyone to miss out on this opportunity to see John Calvert, so one of the fliers has been copied into this email at the bottom.

We will be rearranging our normal meeting room at Coco’s to accommodate a larger crowd so please help spread the word so that other magic enthusiasts don’t miss out on the evening’s entertainment.  SAM 248 is offering a special for non-members:  pay 2013 member dues at the Nov 7th meeting and get free admission to the John Calvert lecture on that night, AND, free admission to the Steve Strange lecture on December 5th.  With everyone’s help spreading the word, we hope to get some former members back in the assembly and attract some new members with this offer.
